WANTED: Fashion advice please!!

It's not often that I get to seriously dress up but Crimbo is coming which means parties and events are heading our way too!

Our work's Christmas do is going to be at ACC in Liverpool for the exciting Cirque de Lumiere event. There's going to be aerial dancers, light-shows that promise to be spectacular, a tantilisingly tempting 3 course meal, complete with bacon butties at midnight to soak up the bucket loads of alcohol undoubtedly consumed! Oh, I mustn't forget to mention the dodgems and waltzers too!!

This is a classy affair, so that means no jeans or the tunic/leggings combo. Now, where this easy for the men; chuck on a classic 3 button suit and boom, sorted! It's a tough one for me, who usually does just wear trousers to the office.

I've managed to order an amazing peplum tuxedo dress from Scarlett & Jo that looks AMAZING (without blowing my own trumpet, like!), but my question to you guys is... what shoes??

Can you come up with anything better?

The model on Scarlett & Jo's site looks awesome with her t-bar style shoes but I'm not sure this would suit me. I'm way to short for this. I was toying with the idea of a classic pointed court shoe but thought it would look slightly outdated?  Strappy shoes could work but they tend to have very slim heels and I would much rather a platform or chunky heel for comfort. Not wearing heels all that often means that when I do, I hurt, and I hurt badly, on the balls of my feet!!

Another thing... colour? Do I go for black, as per the dress, and team with festive gold accessories? Or do I go for something to make my outfit 'pop', like an emerald green shoe and/or bag?

Tights or bare legs?

OMG, someone help me. One thing I'm certain of though is that my hair will be up and out of the way, although all advice is welcomed, you guys!!

Eggs at Christmas - Rant of The Week

Now this post was originally scheduled for New Year but, for some reason (possibly the delayed Millenuium bug?) it didn't post. But here we go anyway, it's relevant all the same...

Now that the Christmas festivities are over and we embark on a fresh start and a New Year.... who's looking forward to Easter?

NO! ME NEITHER!!

I was shopping at Asda on December 28th and when I was in the queue, I was greeted by this ridiculous lovely offering at the till.

What is with shops? Seriously, why are they a full quarter ahead of us - there's so much pressure on the consumer it's unreal.

It's bad enough that in the Winter looking for coats or boots is impossible because it's all about the sheer blouses and peep toe wedges for Spring, but to prolong our Crimbo gorging with an Easter range before the year is out is just unspeakable.

Easter is late this year too - in the middle of April as opposed to in March like last year.

Piddle off! I still have mince pies in the cupboard for God's sake.

It's no wonder people seem to be both putting their trees up and taking their trees down earlier and earlier these days. We're being forced to join in with their ridiculous schedules.

Can we not enjoy a season for what it is any more?

That's my rant of the week. And... I refuse to even look at a Creme Egg until at least Valentine's Day has been and gone.

I'm cracking up here, it's no yolk. Do you succumb to the supermarket's poaching of your purse contents or are you just as fried as I am by the whole thing?

Excuse the puns - my brain's scrambled - I don't know what month it is. Cheers Asda!!

Christmas Traditions in Our House

I adore Christmas, always have and I'm pretty sure I always will. It was my Dad who was the major Christmas nut in our family, always making it feel special and somehow, even as kids, we never ever argued on Christmas day. There was something eerily magical about it, right into my adult years.

This year, Carson and I made a plate for Santa's mince pie and Rudolph's carrot.

Christmas Eve we got one present to unwrap from our parents - new pyjamas. So we'd all get a bath early to change into our new pjs, whilst dad would run up the road to the chippy for sausage and chips for tea. We'd munch through our tea in the living room on the floor whilst watching The Snowman - usually followed by Scrooged on VHS that my nan had taped from her Sky. Am I the only one who is conditioned to believe that Christmas isn't Christmas without Bill Murray?  Anyway...

Finley and Carson in their Christmas PJ's 2015.

I think Christmas Eve was the only night of the year that we'd all go to bed when we were told without moaning, but not before the obligatory mince pie and carrot were carefully placed on the hearth and our stockings all laid out in our own personal areas of the living room.

No fancy colour schemes for us. Just an explosion of all things festive.

We had quirky little Christmas Day traditions. No TV for anyone until after 6pm (and as we grew older that also became an "MPFZ" aka mobile phone free zone!). Some of my school friends found it weird I'd not watched the hottest Christmas movie at the time on terrestrial TV but I really didn't care. It's what made Christmas different.  The mini variety pack's of individually boxed cereal to choose from for breakfast. Buying these at any other time of the year just felt... weird! I mean seriously, you knew Crimbo was coming when Mum bought those bad boys!

New PJ's, mince pie and carrot, thumbs up to that!
I replicate these traditions with my own children because I really want them to feel how special it can be, just as I was lucky enough to with my brother and sisters.

Carson, being 7 years old now, is just at that stage were he know's what Christmas traditions we do and is really into them now too. Christmas eve, before bed, he asked if he could be the one to open the variety boxes of cereals and place one each for all four of us into our bowls at the dining table ready to be opened in the morning. Bless. Never known a child to be so excited at such a small thing but it shows that these little traditions really do add to the suspense and excitement of Christmas. For me, anyway.
Simply must get a pic in front of the tree every year!

I love my family with all my heart. Even the hubby who's a bit of a grump when it comes to Christmas - he still gets involved, for both the kids' sake and my own traditional churning, memory making joy, however sad that may be to some.  What I would give to have one more Christmas as a little girl again. If you could bottle the anticipation and magic up it would be priceless. Alas, my young days will never return so I use every ounce of that wish as the fire power behind making my own children's Christmases everything it possibly can be. Filled with love, magic and difference to any other normal day of the year.

I'd love to hear of any traditions that you guys have, do you follow any of the same as we do?

Flash Giveaway!!

In the summer I worked with Koalapak, reviewing their Mega Pak. Well, I say I...

Koalapak create fun, exciting and educational arts & crafts boxes delivered to your door, with all materials you need included. Koalapaks are curriculum linked and aimed at children aged between 3 and 8 years old.

... So I suppose you could say it was Carson who worked with them, really! His own words here display his utter joy at receiving his very own post, complete with his name written on this huge, jam-packed box of arts and crafts galore. What a lovely idea for a Christmas gift with a twist.

They come in 4 different sizes: Mini (£3.95), Mini Plus (£8.95), Jumbo (£13.95) and Mega (£16.95) and are subscription based in that a box is shipped mid-month, every month. If subscriptions aren't your thing then don't stress, you can cancel at any time and aren't obliged to join for any set amount of time.

With the ever growing trend of Christmas Eve boxes this brings something fresh and exciting to the mix, especially when you compare it to the standard colouring book and felts that last all of 5 minutes! So, I've teamed back up with Koalapak and one of you guys can win your very own Jumbo Pak just in time for Christmas. Use it to keep the kids occupied when they break up from school. Present it to your little ones on Christmas Eve for arts and crafts fun and games. Or maybe Santa wants it in his sack? You decide!

Christmas Fun Guide: Cheap & Cheerful Festive Crafts from The Works

Being on maternity leave this festive season, it means I've got lots of time to have some crafty fun with Carson - something I am LOVING!

I've stumbled across The Works when I was looking for inspiration and have found some little gems that I wanted to share with you...

carsonsmummy.blogspot.co.uk

carsonsmummy.blogspot.co.ukComplete with ribbons, shiny pins and colourful buttons in an array of shapes and sizes, Carson and I had so much fun adding our own touch to the tree this year.

He's super proud of his bauble (as I am of mine!) and it takes pride of place on the front of the tree.

Time needed: 30mins.
Cost: £4 to make 2 baubles
Ease of use: 9/10, Carson got a little frustrated at times because I was telling him to be careful with the pins.
Final Result: GORGEOUS!

I used to make my own mobiles as a child. I fondly remember my dad drawing then cutting out several mini Santas then a large one. We'd colour them in before he attached them all together with string.

I can't draw for toffee so when I saw this set for a solitary quid - I absolutely had to try it out. It comes with coloured felt pens and glitter glue and all the drawing and cutting out is already done for you.

Any child who loves colouring in will be happy for up to an hour decorating and glitzing up this decoration. Carson gives this a huge thumbs up.

Time needed: 60 mins.
Cost: £1
Ease of use: 9/10, slightly fiddly to attach the dangly images using the thin string as the holes are a little wider than the knots you can make. Tape fixes this easily.
Final Result: For a quid, it's a must-have for the kids.

Ahhh a snowy scene on Christmas Day. OK maybe that's a rarity these days, but you can create your own little one in a globe, that's also a fridge magnet!

Colour in the background image of your choice (there are 4 to choose from), then use the foam cut out pieces to create an overlay to add that third dimension. There's even googly eyes!

Time needed: 30 mins.
Cost: £3 to make 2 globes
Ease of use: 10/10 absolutely nothing stopped us!
Final Result: Magic.

carsonsmummy.blogspot.co.uk

carsonsmummy.blogspot.co.ukWe made our own crackers last year, we bought the kit from Marks & Spencer for £10-£12 ish and we were really pleased with the outcome. No more chucking away the rubbish plastic tat that come inside the usual crackers, oh no! We can pop in a treat that we know we like! So we said we'd make our own every year.

This year though, I found a kit that were much much more cost effective - half the price in fact. Complete with hats, jokes, ribbons and snaps it really is fun constructing your very own 'personalised to taste' crackers.
Carson opted for a chocolate coin in his, whereas I opted for some scrummy Celebrations instead.

Time needed: 30 mins.
Cost: £5.99 to make 6 crackers
Ease of use: 8/10 - Slipping the tabs together and tying the ribbons is fiddly. Keep the kids involved and let them pass you the stuff as you need it, they'll only get really annoyed when they can't do it themselves!
Final Result: A personalised cracker with a joke and a hat - a lovely touch at dinner!

carsonsmummy.blogspot.co.uk

carsonsmummy.blogspot.co.ukWe've got these ready for Christmas Day, it saves the kids (and adults!) from any frustration at the table.  At a cost of just £1 for a pack of 4, these place mats are a steal. An absolute steal!

Time needed: If yes, then buy these!
Cost: £1
Ease of use: 10/10
Final Result: A hot Christmas dinner without falling over the kids!

All of the above would only cost you £15.99 in total, giving you some quality finished products whilst providing a whole lotta fun in the process.

Take a minute and imagine what you could buy for £25. Now that you've imagined it, get entering below. That's right, I've teamed up with The Works to offer one of you lovely lot the chance to win £25 to spend with them.

Love chocolate? Love Baileys? Read on...

Baileys, that warming creamy burst of seasonal delight. I just adore Baileys, I truly do. Best served on the rocks (feel like a mobster using that phrase!) I could drink the whole bottle without even realising it - not that I would recommend you doing so, of course.^

When I heard they were launching a new bottle for their Belgian chocolate flavour, I simply had to feature it here!

As far as the actual drink goes... Well gee-freaking-whizz... Talk about tantalising those tastebuds. An incredibly rich chocolatey taste, mixed with cream and irish whiskey for a mouth watering tang you'll not forget. There is actually 30g of belgian chocolate in each bottle, including Madagascan vanilla too.

I actually moaned it was that good (And what?!)

There's no denying it's luxurious, it's indulgence at it's best, so at £16.99 for a 50cl bottle I say snap it up. If you're looking for a present for a chocolate loving tipple drinker, this is the one. THE ONE.

The bottle, stunningly & colourfully embossed, oozes class already, yet for the Christmas season there will be limited editions of a gold version (snazzy!). You must be quick though as they're only available whilst stocks last.

Have you managed to try it yet? It's on my Christmas list, that's for sure!

The Baileys Chocolat Luxe limited edition gold bottle is available throughout all retailers while stocks last. RRP of £16.99 for 50cl.
Available in-store from 1st November 2014 www.baileys.com

^ Please drink responsibly!!

*I was sent the pictured sample, free of charge, in return for an honest review.

Favourite Christmas Presents

This week's #shareitsundays is a tough topic in The Smith household!

Favourite Christmas Presents...

Magic of Christmas

Santa's delivery
Well if the look on Carson's face for each and every present opened told you anything, it's that EVERYTHING was his favourite on the day!

Let me tell you, Carson is so well mannered and an exceptionally grateful child. I knew that he'd have no issues with his haul from Santa, but felt sure there'd be a warm favourite by now.

Well, no, not really! He is still buzzing over his new play things and everyday so, short of listing everything down, I'm not really sure what presents to write about.

Alongside goodies from within his fave TV shows; Spongebob and Monster's Inc, I can say that I was conscious of ensuring he had a few 'retro' style gifts this year. Possibly a selfish act, because it made me feel all warm and nostalgic, but they were greeted with as much awe as everything else.

Top trumps, yo-yo, stocking bursting with fruit/chocolate coins/a few pennies, the flashing wheel on the metal rod thing - you know what I mean. I bet you had one yourselves!! #Addictive

Flashing Wheel on Metal Rod-thing!

I'm a great believer that children should remain children so when I see the very young (aged 4-6yrs old) getting brand new adult tablets for Christmas 'from Father Christmas' it makes me sad. Elves don't make adult's tablets!!

Don't get me wrong, tablets made and specifically aimed at children are excellent. They have great educational value as well as entertainment value too.

Carson has an Innotab 2 that Santa brought last year for him, one of the best investments ever made. So this year warranted a few new cartridges to re-new that past gift that no-doubt would have been forgotten all about after receiving all these new goodies this year!

Connect 4, Spongebob Edition, was a retro-ish game choice this year. Although I don't like the 'modern twist', it seems pointless to me, we just play the original version and it brings hours of fun for us both.

I guess, in summary, to not have a fave christmas present is more a testament to what was actually received this year as opposed to not having anything worth talking about!! Classic, timeless, loved all year round gifts.

I doubt I'll be as lucky every year but I'm deffo as chuffed as Carson this year :-)

*Review* I want one of those - Bad Egg!

Ever had someone ask you what you want for Crimbo, or a birthday and you really don't know what to say?

Socks? Slippers? Smelly set?

Well stop being so boring and check out IWOOT, aka I Want One Of Those, at www.iwantoneofthose.com for endless ideas.

You won't even KNOW you want one 'til you see them!

I was asked to choose a selection of items from a list that I would most like to review, and this item was suitably ticked as my family LOVE EGGS!

We can't go one single week without dippy eggs and soldiers. Our egg cups are always cracking though, so we are down to our last egg cup in the house at the moment which  means we can't have the Old Skool lunch together.

Bad Egg not only looks cool (Mo' and all!), it's plastic so the cracking/smashing of egg cups issue should be egg-stinct *scoff* in The Smith family household.

Perfect for a Secret Santa or that 'something small' for someone's birthday, you really can't go wrong with this item and, at only £6.99, I am going to buy a few more to have a decent set of them in my house. I'm gunna have too seeing as Carson 'bagsied' this one for himself (with great delight I might add!)

If you don't fancy the 'bad egg' look, why don't you check out the other egg cups on offer at I Want One Of Those by clicking to their egg page here.
