Reindeer Rocket from Big Cup Little Cup

I'm a coffee fiend. Can I function without? HA!

As time has gone on, I find myself preferring a full-bodied, strong coffee so when I was sent some limited edition Reindeer Rocket from Cafepod & their Big Cup Little Cup range to review I was like a dog to a bone - it has a strength rating of 9. Yesss!

Given it's strength, there's no surprises that this is a Lungo coffee capsule, that is a big cup as opposed to an espresso, a little cup (Hence - Big Cup Little Cup!)

Retailing at £2.80 for 10 capsules in each box, they are Nespresso compatible.

What if you don't have a Nespresso machine though, or you foolishly lent it to someone for a family do with no time to get it back to review some items you may have been sent (oops)?
I could have cried - I just wanted to drink my Reindeer Rocket. I needed that Rocket!

Teasing myself, I opened the individually wrapped pod and the aroma hit me. A hint of spice to a deep rich chocolatey coffee. Gah! What could I do?

Then came the brainwave, what about making a one-cup cafetiere using the coffee blend inside the pod?

I peeled off the foil lid and emptied into my cafetiere adding just enough hot water for one mug. I let it brew for a couple of minutes, the aroma filling the entire downstairs of my house, before plunging and pouring into my snazzy coffee glasses, that I also received.

Use cafepods without nespresso machine, using cafepods

The result? A perfectly brewed, well rounded, full bodied coffee with an excellent flavour. Ok so I didn't get the usual frothy top as in a Nespresso but everything else was all there. I always get the ratio of coffee to water wrong when using cafetieres but by using my CafePods, I get it spot on every time. I usually drink my coffee white but black just socks it to ya' - perfect for first thing in the morning before work or a day with the kiddies.

Get ready for the Christmas season and treat yourself to some nespresso compatible Big Cup Little Cup coffees at www.bigcuplittlecup.com and take advantage of this 15% off your first order code as well: CARSONS15
There's a lot to choose from, whether you want Lungo or Espresso, and there's also Christmas gift boxes for that coffee loving friend of yours (Festive Fuel Gift Pack for me please!!)

Have you tried Big Cup Little Cup capsules yet? What's your perfect cuppa like?

*REVIEW* Rug Doctor

So the lovely people at Rug Doctor recently sent me a machine and some carpet detergent for the purpose of reviewing. It couldn't have come at a better time as I've recently decorated my living room and was toying with the idea of a new carpet to finish the look.

The machine arrived in a huge box, it felt like Christmas! Upon opening it, there was a net bag containing all the extra fixtures and fittings like tubes and nozzles to get at the corners of your carpets, a bottle of detergent and the Rug Doctor itself. Scrambling for instructions in the box, I started to panic that there weren't any! Seems I was having a bit of a panic over nothing as the instructions are as clear as day, on the stickers all over the machine. Clear step by step instructions - any dope could follow them - *BONUS*!!

Pic 2. First ever clean leaves filth stripes :-(
The machine was much heavier than I'd anticipated, and I started to worry a little just how heavy it would be with the tank full too, but it was surprisingly easy to manoeuvre and those nozzles in the net are there to make it easier still.

Having several coffee spills over the years, plus the inevitable toddler 'food grind' etc I was aware there were a good few stains that needed lifting - so the Rug Doctor review was predominantly going to be about whether it worked in that department. Let's be clear... it does. (See Pic 1 at foot of review.)

However, using RugDoctor has made me really question why I've not cleaned my carpets before. In fact - it sickened me.

After doing the first run around in the living room, the water that had to be removed from the tank was black. I'm not kidding guys. BLACK. Never in a million years did I expect it to be so utterly filthy.

I re-positioned my furniture back in the living room - making sure I used tin foil under the feet to prevent any staining whilst drying - and I was just not happy. You could see lines of filth from where I'd run over the carpet with the Rug Doctor.

2nd use - gleaming carpet! (Coffee table shadow, not dirt!)
I was absolutely mortified and made a quick texting spree to make sure no-one was to come to my house for at least 24 hours! (Pic 2).

Impatiently I waited until the carpet had dried - a reasonable time of approx 3.5 hours, with open windows and radiator switched on - before I refilled the tank with hot water and detergent again and off I went...

Though not black, the water was murky grey in colour. Just how much dirt had my carpet been retaining over the past 3 years I'd been in this house? My son is 4 and he'd been crawling in this a few years ago. My gorgeous 3 year old nephew Tyler and my cousin's beautiful 2 year old girl Maisy-Sue have been playing on these carpets. I felt a wave of shame.

On the plus side, how powerful is this Rug Doctor to be able to draw out so much of what we can't see with our eyes?! With so little effort too.

After the second run - looks like new!
I left it another 3.5 hours until repositioning the furniture in their spaces - in case I needed to re-do it again. But no, it was okay! PHEW!!! As it was drying, the second time around, you could see the lines were fading, the colour was brightening and the texture was softening. Utter relief, and shocked at the difference that was now evident. My carpet had been vile just a matter of hours ago, yet the only reason I wanted a new one was to finish the look of the redecoration, totally oblivious to the dirt I was allowing to join my family and I in our floor play times.

We vacuum every day so I'd always thought that this was "taking care" of our carpet.

How wrong was I? :-s

Going back to my initial pondering of Rug Doctor - does it remove stains. Yes it really does. I'd been concerned by a particularly large coffee stain that I was sure was set to stay, but this came out after the first use of the machine. The second run was clearly to deep clean the depths of the shag.

I'd absolutely 100% recommend this Rug Doctor for all and sundry.

Pic 1. coffee top, gone bottom!

Step by step guide easily found on the body of the machine mean you cannot go wrong in terms of application of the detergent. The drying time is more than reasonable and the power in its' cleaning is simply awesome.

I've managed to save a massive couple of hundred pounds by not buying a new carpet, all for one days use of the Rug Doctor.

I received mine free of charge for the purposes of review, but you can hire these machines from retail outlets at a daily or 48hr rate, usually in the region of around £22.99.

Check out Rug Doctor's store locator here for your closest outlet.
Follow them on twitter here too for hints, tips and special offers that they often tweet.

I'll be making the RugDoctor a part of more rigorous household clean from now on. I will use this a minimum of 4 times a year and I vow never to get such disgusting carpets ever again. Thanks RugDoctor!

To finish, just to show you again the difference between first clean and second clean with the RugDoctor again, see below - wow!

Have you used a RugDoctor before? I'd love to hear your stories!

*Review* Eden Project Shop El Salvador Coffee

el salvador coffee, carsonsmummy review, Coffee is my downfall. Heck, what am I saying? It's my drug!! Give me a full-bodied coffee any time of the day and I am indebted to you.
So to receive a nice bag of coffee ground from Eden Project Shop to review was a very exciting moment for me. I'm actually being serious with you though - this is coming from the person who declared that next Christmas I want a Tassimo machine and that's it.

Firstly, let me tell you a bit about the coffee itself, which I have taken from www.edenproject.com
"El Salvador coffee beans or grounds come from Monte Sion a family owned coffee farm that has been growing coffee since 1906 and has focused on producing speciality coffees.
Dr Urrutia and his family founded Monte Sion Nuevo Amanecer to help the communities in the rural area of Ahuachapan, serving around 400 people.
With 10% of the production cost of every 100lbs of green coffee going to the community, it has created better homes, food, clothing and improved health as a result of a primary healthcare programme and rural medical campaigns every 2 to 4 months."

Immediately, you can be confident in the product you're buying and it's origin - the addition of the trusty 'Rainforest Alliance Certified' stamp is clear to see on the front of the packaging as well.

As Carson can't enjoy coffee with me, I decided to take my bag of El Salvador to the office and share with a colleague. Albeit begrudgingly, I must admit I thought it would be nice to have another opinion too.

The smell is divine, and that was before I even opened the bag as there is a very small push button at the head of the bag which you can press to allow the aroma to release.

I prefer my coffee white (but only a drop or two of milk) and strong so when I saw that this coffee is light to medium bodied I decided to make it a tad stronger in the cafetiere - my chosen implement - by adding an extra heaped teaspoon of coffee. You can also use this coffee in a filter machine or jug by the way.

My colleague prefers her coffee black, so it was the perfect opportunity to determine the difference, if any between both cups.

Firstly, my coffee (white) looked very weak after adding just a small drop of milk and I was concerned that I should've added 2 extra teaspoons from the off. The taste, was smooth and, yes, medium bodied. Not exactly my preference but not as light as I had thought it would be. The black coffee, looked beautiful so after polishing off my white mug, the temptation to have another - but black this time -was eating away at me.

The difference was actually very obvious despite only the small addition of milk in the first mug. If I had this coffee in the house/office again - I would definitely choose to drink it black. Or perhaps purchase a full-bodied variety instead.

My colleague enjoyed hers black and had commented that it 'tasted exactly how it smells'.

There was no powdery residue, that can be a common occurrence with cafetiere coffees and the is no bitter after taste - just a smooth, fragrant and all round pleasant beverage

On the whole, I really did enjoy this coffee. It retails at £4 for a 227g bag - well worth it.

I would recommend this coffee for any degree of coffee lover. Follow the instructions for a light bodied brew, add an extra teaspoon for medium and have it black with an extra teaspoon for a fuller, stronger taste.

I'll be buying it!

* REVIEW* Mocha Hot Chocolate - Eden Project Shop

In weather like ours in recent months, there's nothing better than curling up on the couch with the fire on holding a nice big mug of Coffee or Hot Chocolate is there?

Luckily for me, I didn't have to decide upon which to go for thanks to the most recent item sent to me, in order to review, from the Eden Project Shop - the Mocha Hot Chocolate

Firstly, a bit of background on the product itself... it is 100% organic and 54% is pure cocoa solids. Smooth and rich flavoured chocolate mixed with strong Traidcraft smooth organic coffee, it promises to deliver the perfect hot chocolate drink.

With a sale price of £6.50 for 300g, it is outrageously expensive compared to my Cadbury or Galaxy varieties usually purchased. However, this is no ordinary chocolate drink - let me tell you!

I opened and dived my nose right in the bag to catch a whiff and, well, I really didn't need to. I nearly choked haha! The fragrant rich chocolate and smooth and strong coffee aromas were divine. I could tell this was going to be a 'special occasion' kinda beverage immediately.

You'll notice by the image that it's not a powdered drinking chocolate as per usual shop-bought varieties, but reminded me more of a smashed Flake sealed in a lockable bag. Some huge pieces of chocolate in there - it worried me how it was supposed to dissolve, as I have the worst luck ever when it comes to powdered drinks. Always gulping down a ball or two of powder disguised as froth! (You so know what I'm talking about here!)

As per the instructions, I added hot milk, stirred and waited for the chunks to melt and dissolve into my mug.

As you will see, there are slight 'bits' that cover the inside of the mug and a few remnants remained at the base too but these aren't powdery, so are much easier on the palette. Its gives an element of 'reality' to the drink. It really is chocolate!!

It is so strong - in a really great way though, for me. I do use skimmed milk though so I would advise anyone purchasing this who would prefer a more smooth over rich taste - use semi or whole milk. The drink had a thicker consistency to any other I've had, but not so much so that it was like a hot milkshake - more 'indulgent' I would say. You can really, truly, distinguish the richness (almost bitter) chocolate and the strong but smooth coffee just rearing it's head. I let Carson have a small sip - he hated it. This really isn't for kids, far too full bodied and rich. It's an adult treat!

I must admit, even I struggled with the size of my mug - which was of a pretty standard size - down to the sharpness. Again, I should have used semi or whole (but I don't buy or like these is hot drinks).

Given the above, I think £6.50 is perfectly reasonable for a quality organic product such as this because you won't polish it off before next pay day - of that I am sure!

Would I drink it again? YES
Would I buy it again? ....AT CHRISTMAS.

It pains me to say that I wouldn't buy this regularly even though it really is so much better than any other hot choc I've had, it is just too deluxe to drink on a regular basis. However, as I said, it is worth the money so I would purchase for special occasions such as Christmas, or friends/family coming to stay.

All in all - best mocha chocolate of all time - especially if you love coffee and chocolate as much as me!

PS Remember that Eden Project Shop provides a gift wrapping service too - so for chocoholics, the caffeine crazed or just the person who has everything - this will be a perfect present (and better than socks any day!)
