Last week I blogged about the 4 week challenge that I'm embarking on with Ideal World TV, by trying Fast Diet Kitchen's ready meals. The challenge is one I've taken on before, the 5:2 plan. You literally eat/drink as normal for 5 days, but for 2 days a week you limit your calorie intake to just 500 (or 600 for men). Great for those who find life gets in the way of a strict dieting/exercising regime, or if you just struggle with willpower issues, like me!
FDK and Ideal World TV have sent me 8 lunches and 8 dinners to use on my fast days. Their service is exactly that - delivering your fast day meals to your door. Ready made and/or pre-portioned meals are great for this plan as, often, it's difficult to create a balanced 500 calorie day otherwise. They're also great for taking to work, just blast them in the microwave for a couple of minutes and you're done!
Today marks the end of my first week and here's what I've taste tested...
WEEK 1 / FAST DAY 1
Garden Pea & Smoked Ham Soup for lunch (213 cal)
Tastes as fresh as the peas in a pod from my Grandad's old allotment. Seriously refreshing with just the right amount of seasoning. The ham pieces are too small to really chew into but the hint of smokiness is there to cut through that strikingly fresh pea sensation!
Vegetable Casserole (116 cal)
A surprisingly large portion, chunky texture with a lot of sauce. It was a very rich flavour, almost red-winey if you know what I mean? I added a handful of cabbage to break up the richness of the casserole. I've no idea how, given the size of the portion, it is only 116 calories!
WEEK 1 / FAST DAY 2
Scotch Broth (174 cal)
WOW! This was one of the nicest soups I have ever had. More beef than I would even expect to find in even a premium soup. Perfect seasoning with a lovely kick from the black pepper. It reminded my of second-day Scouse. I could eat this every day. Highly recommend!
Moroccan Meatballs (307 cal)
Giant couscous in a spiced sauce make for a stew like texture, which is great when you're so hungry come tea-time. The meatballs themselves are meaty but not chewy, more melt-in-the-mouth. My only criticism? It went far too fast!
WEEK 1 / WEIGH IN DAY.
I'll admit that the bank holiday weekend has meant takeaway pizza and family movies, a roast dinner with all the trimmings (and even pud!) and a buffet over a family catch-up. Not all on the same day, I might add, but over a prolonged period. But that's the beauty of the 5:2 plan!
If you tune in to Ideal World TV tonight at 9pm, they're showcasing all about the 5:2 plan and FDK offers.
This week I have lost a surprising 2.2lb and I am made up. Bring on week 2 with FDK...

I really want to try this diet plan providing they have veggie options. I've heard good things about the. x
ReplyDeleteI've heard such a lot of good things about 5:2 eating, I'm kind of tempted to have a go but I really can't imagine only eating 500 calories in a day! I'll be interested to see your progress :-)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your weight loss, I must admit those meals do look tasty x
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad it is going well for you!
ReplyDeleteThose meals actually look appetising and something I would eat, they usually do not appeal at all. Well done on your weight loss x
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if my comment has worked or been swallowed :( Well done on your weight loss - it is fab progress!
ReplyDeleteOh I am loving the look of that meatball meal (who would have thought I would say that about weight loss food) well done on your loss! x
ReplyDeleteWell done so far. Those photos make the food look great x
ReplyDeleteThey look great and I can not believe the vegetable casserole has only 116 kcal either. It looks way too good. 2.2lbs is a great weekly weight loss. I am currently trying to lose weight too, so if you ever need a bit of motivation, let me know.
ReplyDeleteFDK looks like a seriously yummy foodplan. Good for you for sticking to those fast days. I don't think I could do 500 even for a day though. But I will tell people about this food plan if they are looking for something like that.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your weight loss, I always admire people that get on with their diet xx
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try this! Been wanting to try the 5:2 diet for ages but struggled with what to eat on fast days. I don't function well on a small amount of food! The food looks filling and delicious.
ReplyDeleteLydia xx
I'm actually surprised at how appetising the food looks, I don't mean that to sound offensive I just always wrongly assumed it would look a bit unappealing. Well done so far with your weight loss.
ReplyDeleteWOW well done on your loss despite your weekend indulgences. That's the beauty of 5:2 - I've done it a few times for 4 weeks and lost 7 lbs ish - feels like you aren't even trying. Your fast day meals look fairly substantial too x
ReplyDeleteI love your meals! You doing great! I have no will power whatsoever :(
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the weight loss and good luck with the diet - I wouldn't be able to do it as I literally have no will power! x
ReplyDeleteI have considered doing the 5:2 Diet but got put off as I thought it would be hard to think of different meal choices, but this would really help me to do it :)
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the soup and the meatballs... and well done on the 2.2lb that is really good x
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your weight loss! Brilliant to see that the diet is working well for you! x
ReplyDeleteWell done on the weight loss. I will be following your progress with interest.

It's good to read you're getting on well with the products!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! I would have thought 500 calories would look tiny, but these look like really yummy filling meals.
ReplyDeleteI did the 5:2 diet for a while and lost a bit! 2lb is great well done you!
ReplyDeleteMy problem with healthy eating or diet plans is always the food. I don't like cooking and when I do I want comfort food or something substantial. I like plans which mean I don't have to worry about meals because they're taken care of already. Plus this one sounds like it's really working well for you already! x
ReplyDeletethis sounds really interesting. I do worry I would really struggle with the 2 days though! Well done for your first week!
ReplyDeleteI have thought about doing this. Did you do the 2 fast days consecutively?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your weight loss this week, you're doing really well. The meals you ate actually look really healthy and wholesome, I'd love those Moroccan Meatballs :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice and healthy loss! I have tried the 5:2 diet before and whilst I like the concept, I did find it difficult to come up with ideas for meals on those fasting days. So I like the sound of having the meals all ready there for you. xxx
ReplyDeleteWell done on losing 2.2lbs, I've always wanted to try the 5:2 diet.
ReplyDeleteI had the 5:2 recommended to me by my personal trainer cousin - it really does sound like the perfect compromise, as a life with no treats is no life at all!! ;) x
ReplyDeleteWell done on your weight loss, the meals look delicious and sound like they are seasoned well which is what usually puts me off diet meals :-) x
ReplyDeleteWell done on your weight loss, it doesn't even look like diet food
ReplyDeleteI would never image food from a diet company to look like this. That veggie casserole looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteDaniella | Freshly Pressed Beauty
This doesn't look like a bad diet. maybe I will try it.
ReplyDeleteWell done on the great weight loss! Glad you like the taste of the meals. Unfortunately they weren't to my liking, but if we were all the same we would be boring! :-)
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to try this diet however I don't think I'd be able to go the two days without eating as much haha!! I like my food too much x
ReplyDeleteI know a few people that have had success with the 5:2 plan! Congrats on your weight loss!
ReplyDeleteWell done on your loss Jo the food looks lovely you have more will power than me x
