Can I feel my baby practising to breathe?!

The strangest feeling has been occuring the past couple of days. A movement from baby that is defo NOT hiccups (I know all too well what that feels like!) but is far too rhythmic to be kicks. These periods tend to last anywhere between 5-10 minutes and feel incredibly strange. Different from anything else I've felt from bump - and you all know by now that this kid doesn't stop moving, like, ever!

I had a little Google sesh and found I wasn't alone - phew. Others had been feeling this too, but it's something that midwives don't like to confirm or deny to the mum-to-be (still not quite understanding as to why that would be if I'm honest)

Apparently it is baby 'practice breathing'. If I hold my own breath for a couple of seconds it is definitely the baby rasing up and down - not me. When I put my hand on his back I can actually feel him doing it. I asked Carsonsdaddy to check I wasn't going insane the other day and he was floored. Couldn't believe it.

There was the usual scare-fest associated with searching symptoms on Google, could it be baby having seizures, could I be going in to aneurysm mode myself etc. But there is no change in his frequency of movements and I am perfectly happy with the forums and threads I have found were lots of other women feel the same as me. The moment I become concerned, I will obviously be seeking urgent help!

Did you feel baby practice breathing? Next time it happens, I'm going to video it, get evidence! I do feel that people may roll their eyes "whatever Jo!" but I swear that I can feel my baby practising to breathe :-)

Share your stories too, I'd love to hear them....

  1. Google is the worst for googling thing. Whatever you google, it always says 'cancer or death' haa.

My housemates sister is pregnant and she's just started feeling it moving, she says it feels like a pulse. It's so weird how there is a person inside a person and it moves about. I think I would get so freaked out if I were pregnant!

  5. This is interesting. It's not something I've felt myself (I'm 33 weeks) but babies do all sorts of things to prepare themselves for the big bad world
